Description

The Albert Public House is a corner public house built between 1865 and 1867. It features yellow brick with red brick dressings and stucco trim, topped with a slate roof. The building stands four storeys tall, with three windows facing Victoria Street and a five-window return that includes a two-storey, three-window extension.

The original ground floor has a canted public house frontage, showcasing central panelled and glazed doors flanked by windows, all framed by granite pilasters that support a fascia, cornice, and balustrade adorned with ball finials. Coupled pilasters and small pediments sit above the cornice, extending across the full width of the ground floor. The bar windows and glazed doors are notable for their excellent cut, engraved, and frosted glass.

On the upper floors, the windows feature grouped recessed glazing bar sashes linked by ornate iron balconettes on the second and third floors, with similar window designs on the return. A moulded stucco string runs over the first floor, while a prominent stucco main entablature boasts a very deep cornice with lions' head modillions. There is also a stucco moulded parapet upstand at the centre of both fronts, with "THE ALBERT" incised on it. The interior retains some bar fittings from around 1900. Originally, the pub was adjacent to the former Artillery Brewery.
