Description
Wellington Barracks is a military barracks built between 1833 and 1859 by Sir Frederick Smith of the Royal Engineers, in consultation with Philip Hardwick. The building was entirely rebuilt behind its facades from 1980 to 1983. It features stucco walls and slate roofs, showcasing a functional military Grecian style. The structure consists of a long central range with link screens connecting to east and west wings, all set back behind a parade ground.
The barracks are three stories tall with dormered attics. The central range has 27 windows, with the middle three bays slightly projecting. Each wing contains three windows. A central tetrastyle Greek Doric portico is flanked by prostyle porticoes, which are also found on the wings. The upper floors have recessed glazing bar sashes with architraves, while the ground floor is rusticated. The upper levels are defined by giant Doric pilasters that support an entablature with a blocking course. The central three-bay section features a pediment with a clock, and there are pediments over the wings. Greek Doric column screens connect the wings to the main range.
