Description
Number 20 Buckingham Gate, including the railings, is a substantial terrace house built in 1895 by Sir Reginald Blomfield. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. It is designed in a Flemish style with a stepped gable and has four storeys, a gable storey, and a basement, presenting an irregular facade with two main bays.
The entrance is located in an archway to the left, which has carved capitals and a small domed oriel above it. To the right, there is a wide, square-cornered bay window that projects from the basement to the second floor, topped with a tented copper roof. The first floor features a polygonal oriel with a copper half-dome and a finial. The windows are a mix of mullioned and transomed designs, casements, and leaded lights.
A rich decorative frieze of carved brickwork adorns the building, showcasing figures and acanthus scrolls. The stepped gable includes a Seralin window and a central column that rises to a finial, with pinnacles on either side. Some windows have patterned blind arches above them, decorated with polychrome designs. An ornamental metal ship emblem is positioned above the ground floor to the right, and the building features elaborate leadwork. The wrought iron railings are of the original design. The interior has not been inspected. This building is recognized as an early work of Blomfield's.
