Description
The Duchy of Cornwall Office is an office building constructed in 1854 by Sir James Pennethorne, with the east wing rebuilt after war damage. It features a stucco exterior and a slate roof, designed in an Italianate palazzo style with rich detailing. The building has a splayed corner block and stands three storeys high, with a basement and a dormered attic. The corner splay has a three-window wide design with three-window returns. A Doric portico-porch is located at the centre of the splay. The windows are recessed plate glass sashes, and the first-floor windows are adorned with Corinthian columns, pilasters, cornices, and pediments, while the window above the porch is elaborated as a Venetian window. The ground floor is rusticated, and there are balustraded balconies on the first floor, along with an enriched sill band on the second floor and an enriched frieze beneath the crowning dentil cornice. The building also features balustraded area parapets.
