Description
The Portway Hotel is a building from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It features a stucco exterior with a double ridge hipped slate roof, cornice, and parapet. The ground floor has channelled flanking pier strips and a band above it. The building has three storeys, a basement, and an attic, with three dormers and three large glazing bar sash windows set in stucco architraves. The right and centre windows on the first floor are blind, while the left window has marginal glazing. There is a portico with an entablature, studded metopes on the soffit of the cornice, and two fluted Doric columns, with five steps leading up to it. The entrance features a glazed door with a rectangular traceried overlight. The east elevation is notable for its pair of wide three-window bays with glazing bar sashes and balusters above in the parapet. A modern extension is present on the side. Inside, there are early 19th-century details, including square balusters on the staircase with cast and wrought iron standards and a reeded cornice in the hall.
