Description

Garston House, built in 1797, is set back from the road and features a forecourt. The front is rendered and includes a cornice supported by brackets, a parapet, a string course at the second floor, and rusticated quoins and plinth. The building has a slate roof with three chimneys, two of which have modillion capping. It stands three storeys tall, with simpler single-storey wings that have a moulded cornice, and a three-storey wing set back to the right. The central portion has three windows on the second floor and five on the first floor, with the outer windows paired and one pair on each side of the central door at ground level. The windows are fitted with glazing bar sashes in architraves. The original panelled door features a cross pattern below and two cusp-headed central panels, topped by a Tuscan portico. The property is enclosed by low railings and has two pairs of gates, one leading to Garsdale and the other to Portway. Inside, the east ground floor room showcases reeded Greek Doric columns and an elaborately decorated ceiling cornice. There is a contemporary staircase with a hall arch, while the upper floors consist of a complex arrangement of small rooms.
