Description
The Frome and District Club is a building originally constructed as two houses in the late 18th century. The left half of the building is rendered and features a moulded stone cornice and a parapet. It stands three storeys high with two sash windows that have glazing bars and plain stone surrounds. The entrance has an architrave door opening topped with a stone pediment supported by consoles. The right half of the building, likely built in the early 19th century, is faced with architrave and also has a cornice and parapet, along with chamfered quoins. This section is three storeys tall and includes a cellar, with three sash windows set in reveals. The first-floor windows are adorned with wrought iron balconettes and have fretted decoration on the panelled internal shutters.
Inside, the building showcases Regency details, including plain square sections, stair balusters with a mahogany handrail, and rose end leaf consoles. The surrounds are reeded with corner rosettes. The roof is slate, and a chimney has been removed from the gable end. The building may be linked to a grand scheme from the 1840s that aimed to connect the North and South Facades, which were previously part of Sheppards Barton, and to create a magnificent Crescent as a fitting conclusion to the area.
