Description

Marldon House, formerly known as Parkfield House, is a large house built around 1835-1840 by Francis Garratt, who previously lived at Compton Castle. The house is stuccoed and features a low-pitched hipped slate roof with deep eaves supported by paired brackets and a panelled soffit. It has a rectangular plan and stands two storeys high.

The south-west and north-west garden fronts each have three bays with sash windows that include glazing bars. The north-east entrance front is asymmetrical and showcases moulded mullion and transom windows with glazing bars set in chamfered openings, complete with hood moulds. The right-hand first floor window has a four-centred head and Y-bar design. Below this is a gabled porch with buttressed corners, featuring a chamfered doorway with a four-centred arch, a hood mould, and glazed double doors with glazing bars and a fanlight with Y-bars. The inner door is similar in style.

A small bellcote is located in the valley of the roof, and there are plain rendered chimney stacks. Inside, the house retains a contemporary geometric staircase with simple stick balusters and an oval lantern. Most of the original joinery appears to be largely intact, including many of the doors, and three original, albeit plain, chimneypieces remain.
