Description

Cilwendeg Lodge is a gate lodge built around 1835 to 1840, which was raised by a storey around 1910. It features whitewashed stucco with a slate half-hipped roof and yellow brick end stacks. The building is two storeys tall and double-fronted, with original arched sash windows on the ground floor that have Gothick glazing bars, recessed in arches that extend down to the ground. There is a plinth shelf around the lodge, and the window recesses are set back. The centre of the front has a taller arched door with a radiating bar fanlight. A fine front portico is supported by two pairs of timber Roman Doric columns and an entablature, with a pedimental gable above that features early 20th-century bargeboards. The ground floor on the northern end has a similar window. The added upper floor includes two arched windows with horned sashes, where the upper halves are square but disguised by the window frame. At the rear, there is a small gable.

Attached to the lodge is the eastern half of a semi-circular sweep of railings that runs from the rear northeast corner, featuring spearhead designs, with a panelled Bath stone end pier topped with a ball finial. From the front northwest corner, there is a short length of taller spearhead rails leading to an eroded openwork iron scrolled pier that has cast-iron Greek acroteria and a small urn. The pedestrian gate that matched the one at No 2 has been removed, as have the main gates.
