Description
The Barn and Stable Range at Cilwendeg Farm is an early 19th-century structure consisting of two attached ranges: a large barn to the northeast and a lofted stable range to the southwest, which is slightly later than the barn. The buildings are made of rubble stone with slate roofs, and the barn features graded slates.
The barn has two high cart entrances with elliptical arches made from Cilgerran stone voussoirs, and it includes double ledged doors that open separately at the lower parts. There are loops on each side and two similar doorways at the rear. The south end wall has a low elliptical arch flanked by doorways that are now internal. An added five-sided horse engine house from the 19th century was constructed at the rear, featuring a hipped slate roof, but this was reduced in 1980 to only part of the outside walls, with a 20th-century roof. The barn's interior is divided into two parts: a 7-bay section and a 4-bay section, separated by a stone wall, with trusses that have two collars, the upper collar pegged and the lower stapled.
The stable range is taller and has a symmetrical front with three bays on each side, spanning two storeys. The openings are of even width, featuring Cilgerran stone voussoirs above cambered arches. There are six large square boarded windows on the upper floor, while the ground floor contains two stables, each with a central door and similarly proportioned windows on either side. The upper halves of the windows are 8-paned, with boarded lower halves, and the left stable door retains a traceried overlight. The south end wall has been rebuilt in concrete block. The rear of the stable range has an outshut with outside steps to the right, and features a door, window, window, and another door, all with stone voussoirs. The interior has been altered to create a single cowhouse, with the loft removed and no signs of interior walls remaining. The roof consists of 10 bays with stapled two-collar trusses.
The barn and engine house were listed in 1980, but the stable was not. The barn is similar to others found on large estate farms, such as those at Llanaeron, Gilfachwen, and Waunifor, dating from around 1795 to 1820. The buildings have group value with other listed items at Cilwendeg Farm.
