Description
The Stable & Coach House at Cilwendeg Farm is probably from around 1830. It comprises a formal range featuring a seven-bay, two-storey central section, originally stables and accommodation, flanked by two-bay coach-house wings and single-bay, pedimented end stables. The building is constructed of whitewashed rubble stone, originally roughcast or stuccoed, with slate or grouted slate roofs. The central section has a hipped roof with deep eaves, while the wings have parapets and the pavilions have gables. A square, louvred lantern with an ogee lead cap was formerly present.
The west front is distinguished by a slightly projected, pedimented centre flanked by two large, five-window curved bows with curved grouted roofs. The centre has an elliptical-arched throughway with stone voussoirs, a blocked first-floor loading door, and a blocked square window in the pediment. A short stone string-course runs on each side, connecting to the curved bows; the string-course on the bows is constructed of brick and the window heads are also brick. The upper floor has five square windows, all blank except for the central one, which has a six-pane sash. The ground floor has arched openings, with three windows and outer doors. Two windows are blank, the centre has a radiating-bar sash, and blocked outer doors are present. Ledged doors with blank tympana are situated on either side of the throughway. Within the throughway, there are two doors on each side, which are now blocked as windows. The coach-house wings originally had two elliptical arched entries with a string-course and parapet. The right wing survives, with stone voussoirs and ledged doors, while the left wing was extended in the 1920s with a slate pent roof and seven-bay folding doors; a steel beam is present within. The end pavilions both have similar timber pediments, square, boarded loft doors on the first floor, and two arched openings on the ground floor, with an outer sash window and an inner door. The right pavilion is more intact, although the pediment has been cut back and the door altered. The left pavilion retains its original pediment and loft window, but the ground-floor openings now have 1920s folding doors.
The east front mirrors the west, with a similar pedimented centre and a square, six-pane window on the first floor above the throughway arch, which now incorporates concealed sliding doors. Below are three six-pane windows, a window, a radiating-bar sash, blocked outer doors, and ledged doors with a six-pane window beneath a fanlight over the door. The wings have a string course and parapet; three arched niches are present on the left, while the right has been opened out with 12-pane horned sashes and fans. The end pavilions have pediments and large arched recesses around horned 12-pane sash windows with fixed fans to the right, and a blank window to the left pavilion. The left pavilion has a blocked arched door on its south side, while the right pavilion has a 1920s triple casement on its north side.
