Description
The attached gatepier and railings to No 1, Cilwendeg Lodge date from around 1835 to 1840. The gate lodge itself was raised by a storey around 1910 and features whitewashed stucco with a slate half-hipped roof and yellow brick end stacks. It is two storeys high and double-fronted, with original arched sash windows on the ground floor that have Gothick glazing bars, all recessed in arches that extend down to the ground. There is a plinth shelf around the building, set back in the window recesses. The centre features a taller arched door with a radiating bar fanlight. A fine front portico consists of two pairs of timber Roman Doric columns and an entablature, with a pedimental gable above that has early 20th-century bargeboards. A similar window is located at the ground floor of the northern end. The added upper floor has two arched windows with horned sashes, where the upper halves are square but disguised by the window frame. There is also a small rear gable.
The gatepier and railings are attached and form the eastern half of a semi-circular sweep of railings that runs from the rear northeast corner. These railings are spearhead style, with a panelled Bath stone end pier topped with a ball finial. From the front northwest corner, there is a short length of taller spearhead rails leading to an eroded openwork iron scrolled pier, which features cast-iron Greek acroteria and a small urn. The pedestrian gate that matched the one at No 2 is no longer present, along with the main gates.
