Description

Belchester Lodge is a gate lodge built in the earlier to mid 19th century, with later additions and alterations. It is a single-storey, five-bay structure with a rectangular plan and a bowed projection offset to the right of center. There is a lean-to timber addition recessed to the outer left and a flat-roofed addition at the rear. The building is constructed of coursed and droved cream sandstone with sandstone ashlar dressings. It features a raised base course, overhanging bracketed timber eaves, and chamfered angles. The openings have pointed-arched, chamfered surrounds, chamfered cills, and moulded hoodmoulds.

On the northwest (entrance) elevation, there is a pointed-arched timber door offset to the left of center and a single window in the bay to the outer left. The two-bay bow to the right of center has single windows, and there is a pointed-arched timber door in the bay to the outer right.

The southwest (side) elevation has a single window centered in the house and a single-storey addition to the right. The southeast (rear) elevation features a flat-roofed addition offset to the left of center and a single window in the bay to the outer right. The northeast (side) elevation has a lean-to addition that obscures the house.

The lodge has various pointed-arched timber casement and sash and case windows, as well as skylights. The roof is grey slate with a piended design and fishscale banding on the bowed projection. Coped wallhead stacks are present on the northeast and southeast sides, with circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1998.

Surrounding the lodge are low, coped, coursed cream sandstone ashlar walls flanking the entrance. There are square-plan, pyramidal-capped piers to the outer left and right, and paired square-plan gatepiers with raised bases and corniced pyramidal caps. The entrance features spearheaded pedestrian gates flanking a similarly detailed two-leaf vehicular gate.
