Description
The Walled Garden with Greenhouse and Sundial at Belchester dates from the earlier to mid 19th century, with later additions and alterations. It features a near rectangular-plan layout, approximately 4,800 square meters, set on a sloping site. The northwest side is enclosed by a tall, square-coped red brick wall, which is buttressed in parts and has a ball-finialled pier at the northeast corner. The remaining sides are enclosed by low rubble sandstone walls, which are partially broken on the east side. A decorative iron pedestrian gate provides access to the garden from the northeast, while a boarded timber door is located on the northwest side. The garden is divided horizontally into three sections, with a sundial positioned in the lower section; little remains of the previous layout.
In the northern corner of the garden, there is a lean-to greenhouse featuring a part-glazed boarded timber door at the center and five-light glazing rows in the flanking bays, with regular panes forming the glazed roof.
A semicircular sandstone garden seat is centered in the upper section of the garden. The balustered sundial is set in the lower section and is aligned with a central stair. It has foliate detailing on the shaft, a tiered square-plan base, and a circular table. To the left of the stair, there is a squat, square-plan sundial, with remains of sandstone carving to the right.
Adjoining the outer face of the northwest wall is a red brick lean-to potting shed. The northwest elevation features a square-headed door offset to the left of center and a single window in the outer left bay, with 6-pane glazing in the timber window and small skylights. The potting shed has a grey slate roof.
The interior was not seen in 1998.
