Description

Nos. 45 and 46 Clarges Street are a pair of terrace houses built around 1730 to 1750. They are constructed of brown brick with stuccoed ground floors and rise to four storeys with basements. Each house features three windows across its façade, with doorways positioned to the left and right, respectively. Both doorways have panelled doors topped with rectangular fanlights set in architrave surrounds.

No. 45 has sash windows without glazing bars, except for revealed casements on the first floor, all set beneath flat red brick gauged arches. In contrast, No. 46 has revealed sashes without glazing bars under flat brown brick gauged arches, with added pediments above the first-floor windows. A moulded cornice runs above the second floor, leading to a parapet with coping.

No. 45 features a cast iron balcony from around 1800 at the first floor and a balconette at the central second-floor window. No. 46 has a wrought iron balconette at the first floor. Both houses have wrought iron area railings. Notably, No. 46 displays a plaque from the London County Council commemorating the residence of Charles James Fox.
