Description

A pair of town houses on Clarges Street, dating from around 1730 and altered in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. They are constructed of stucco with slate roofs, and extend over four storeys, with basements and early 19th-century dormered mansards. Each house is three windows wide. The doorways are on the right and left, respectively. Number 35 has a reeded surround and fanlight beneath a bracketed hood, while Number 36 features fluted columns in antis and a semicircular fanlight. The sash windows have segmental heads and lack glazing bars; however, the ground-floor windows of Number 35 have flat arches with cornices supported by consoles, which were added later. A main cornice and parapet with coping runs along the top of the building. The interior of Number 36 retains 1730 features, including extensive fielded panelling, a staircase (with later square balusters), and a closet wing. Both houses have 18th-century wrought iron area railings, and decorative cast iron balconies to the first floor.
