Description
124 and 126 Hoxton Street are a pair of substantial houses, likely built in the 4th decade of the 18th century. Each house has three storeys above a high basement and is three windows wide. They are constructed from stock bricks with red dressings, featuring cambered arches over the windows. A moulded stone cornice runs below the top storey, leading to a hipped, tiled roof; however, the roof of No 126 is now covered with metal sheeting. Some of the sash windows have been altered.
No 126, the larger of the two houses, retains a well-preserved early 19th-century stone entrance doorway with engaged Doric columns, situated within a single-storey shop that extends over the front garden. No 124 has been similarly extended and is said to retain a timber doorcase with fluted pilasters and carved brackets that support its cornice. The interior of No 124 is reported to have been altered, while No 126 preserves original panelling and joinery of good quality in its entrance passage and stair compartment. The staircase features shaped ends to the steps, column newels topped with ball-finials, and three twisted balusters per bead, which are now capped. Some original panelling and joinery is believed to survive above the ground storey, though much of it is boarded over. The rear elevations of both houses are well-finished, albeit with some alterations.
