Description
Two cannon bollards, dating from the mid-19th century, are constructed from cast iron. They are slender in form, with cannon balls filling the muzzles as an integral design element. The westerly bollard features the maker's mark Bailey Pegg & Co', identifying the London foundry that produced it. The easterly bollard displays the markSt L.S.', representing the parish of St Leonard's, Shoreditch, which commissioned their construction. These are interesting examples of mid-19th century street furniture, reflecting the earlier 19th-century trend of incorporating modified cannons into urban design. They contribute positively to the streetscape and are of particular interest due to the presence of their maker's and parish marks.
