Description
No 136 on Kingsland Road is a mid to late 19th century building that stands four storeys tall and features eight windows. It is constructed from stock brick and has a moderately low pitched hipped slate roof, which includes three raised louvred ventilators along the ridge. There is a loading door located on the top floor in the northern bay. The windows are plain casements.
Inside, access to the upper floors was originally provided by long cobbled ramps, which have since been covered over with cement, intended for horses. This building served as a stable for London tramway horses. The lower part of the structure is obscured by a forebuilding that is one tall storey high, featuring a glazed roof and a continuous raised louvred ridge ventilator. The ground floor has an arcaded design, but it is now mostly blocked and covered with modern tiles and pebbledash. This building is included in the heritage register for its rarity, as it is possibly the only surviving four-storey stable in London.
