Description

Whiteley’s Store is a department store dating from 1908 to 1912, designed by Belcher and Joass. It is constructed with a steel frame and faced with Portland stone. The building is three storeys high with a mezzanine level. The facade has twelve main bays facing Queensway, with three subdivisions over the upper storeys. A giant fluted Doric order of columns is featured on the ground floor and mezzanine, accompanied by plate glass windows and bronze balconies. Above, a similar giant order supports a largely glazed second and third storey, incorporating projecting bay windows. The second and third storeys have small, leaded lights. A low central tower with stepped massing rises above an arched niche that contains the entrance. The building is finished with a modillion cornice. A dome is located on the south-east corner, with an entrance situated beneath it. The interior is not described in the listing.
