Description

Nos 42 and 43, Princes Square are a pair of terraced houses dating from the 1850s, built as part of a planned development for Princes Square. They are constructed of stucco, with the roof obscured. The corner site features four storeys, an attic, and a basement. Each house has a two-window frontage. The facade is characterised by rusticated quoins and channelling to the ground floor. Projecting Ionic porches are present on each facade, and a continuous bombé balcony runs across the first floor. The ground and third floor windows are square headed, while the first-floor windows have rounded upper corners and are flanked by Corinthian half columns. The second-floor windows have a segmental head. All windows are sash windows with plate glass. The south facade is partly blind. A cornice above the third floor incorporates a rich acanthus frieze, leading to arched attic windows and a subsidiary cornice. Cast iron area railings are present. A return elevation is located to the left.
