Description

A terrace of town houses built around 1800 as part of the Portman Estate development. The houses are constructed of stock brick, with the ground floors of numbers 20 to 24, and 26 and 27 finished with channelled stucco. They have concealed slate roofs. Numbers 21 to 23 and 27 are four storeys high, while the others are three storeys. The fronts are three windows wide, except for numbers 19 and 27, which have five and four windows respectively. Semicircular arched doorways are recessed to the left of the three-window fronts, with panelled doors set in panelled jambs and fluted heads. Numbers 20 to 26 have side lights, and numbers 20, 22 and 25 retain radial patterned fanlights. Number 20 has an elaborate cast iron porch. The windows are recessed sashes; numbers 20 and 23 retain glazing bars, all under flat, gauged arches. Number 21 has a mid-19th century canted bay window to the ground floor, and the left-hand ground floor corner frontage of number 27 has been altered. Stucco plat bands are present above the ground floor and on number 27 above the second floor, with a stucco string above the third floor of numbers 21 to 23. Crowning stucco cornices and blocking courses are present throughout, apart from the plain parapet copings of numbers 24 and 26. Wrought iron balconettes are a feature of the first-floor windows of numbers 19, 26 and 27, with the other windows having continuous, geometric patterned cast iron balconies. Cast iron area railings are present, finished with urn finials. A Greater London Council plaque on number 20 records it as the former residence of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson.
