Description
Nos. 1-3 Montagu Place are a group of terraced houses dating from circa 1810-11, constructed as part of James Thompson Parkinson's development of Montagu Square for the Portman Estate. The houses are built of brown brick, with stuccoed ground floors to Nos. 1 and 2, the former featuring banded rustication. They have concealed slate roofs. The buildings are four storeys high, with basements. The fronts are three windows wide for Nos. 1 and 3, and two windows wide for No. 2.
The doorways are semicircular arched, the left-hand one featuring a moulded stucco architrave surround. The doors themselves are panelled, with pilaster jambs and patterned fanlights. The windows are recessed sash windows with flat gauged arches. A plat band finishes off the stucco work on the ground floor. A crowning stucco cornice and blocking course tops the facades. The original cast iron balconies with a geometric patterned design are present on the first floor of Nos. 1 and 3, and individual balconettes on the first floor of No. 2. Cast iron area railings are topped with urn finials.
