Description
The Garrick Club is a gentleman's club located at 15 Garrick Street in the City of Westminster, built around 1860 by F. Marrable. This large Italianate palazzo features Portland cement render and a slate roof, rising three tall storeys above a basement and dormered mansard. The facade is seven windows wide, with a deeply channelled ground floor and vermiculated rustication at the basement level. To the right of the centre, there is an enriched architraved semicircular arched portal that leads to a flight of steps up to the lobby doors.
The building has segmental arched basement lights in the plinth and tall architraved sash windows on the ground floor. The first floor showcases tall piano nobile windows with balustrading and segmental pediments, while the second floor windows are set within a festooned frieze, supported by long console brackets beneath a projecting modillion main cornice. Rusticated and vermiculated quoins are present, along with an applied pedestal and sill course at the first floor level. The main cornice is topped with a balustrade featuring four dies that are developed as corniced chimney stacks.
Inside, the club boasts rich Italianate mouldings, a spacious open well staircase that is top-lit, and an ornate cast iron balustrade. The interiors also include a unique collection of theatrical paintings, reflecting the club's long-standing association with the theatre since its inception.
