Description

No. 16 New Row is a terrace house with a shop, built around 1800-1820 and significantly altered around 1850-1860. It is constructed of yellow stock brick with a slate roof. The building is four storeys high, with dormers in a mansard roof, and has a facade three windows wide. The ground floor features a semicircular arched house doorway on the right side, set within a stucco surround. This surround includes a large, bearded mask as a keystone and a dentil cornice above, supported by ornate console brackets, with a similar bracket on the left side of a later 20th-century shop front. The upper floors contain recessed sash windows, with original glazing bars intact on the first and second floors, each set within a flat, gauged arch. A parapet with coping runs along the top of the building. Originally built as part of the 1630s Bedford Estate development of New Row, adjacent to Covent Garden.
