Description

A terrace of townhouses located at 83-97 Gloucester Place, dating from approximately 1800 to 1820 as part of the Portman Estate development. The buildings are constructed of stock brick with a channelled stucco finish to the ground floor, and have concealed slate roofs. The terrace consists of 4 storeys and a basement, with some houses rising to 5 storeys, and is three windows wide.

The doorways are semicircular and arched, except for number 97, with panelled doors, pilastered or Greek Doric columned side lights, and Coade stone imposts supporting delicately patterned fanlights with lead ornament. Upper floors feature recessed sash windows, some with glazing bars, set within flat, gauged arches. A plat band defines the top of the stucco work on the ground floor, and crowning stucco cornices and blocking courses top the facades. Original cast iron balconies, displaying geometric and anthemion patterns, are present on the first floor. Cast iron area railings with urn finials enhance the streetscape. The terrace forms part of a particularly extensive and well-preserved sequence of Georgian townhouses in London.
