Description
The Courtauld Institute, eastern part, is a terraced town house built around 1774, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. It is part of the Portman Estate development. The building is constructed of brown brick and features a slate roof. It has four storeys, a basement, and a dormered mansard, with three windows across the front.
The entrance is on the left, featuring a semicircular arched doorway framed by a stucco surround that includes modeled relief in the spandrels and fluted pilasters. The door, which dates from the late 19th century, is panelled and glazed, accompanied by a fanlight. The windows are recessed sashes set under flat gauged arches, with the first-floor windows framed by stucco architraves that have dentil cornices. Above the second floor, there is a bracketed and dentilled stucco cornice, and a stucco plat band at the first floor level. The first-floor windows are adorned with cast iron bowed balconettes, and there are 19th-century cast iron area railings.
The interior has also been altered in the mid to late 19th century and into the 20th century but retains some original mahogany doors.
