Description
No. 10 Portman Close is a Grade I listed mews building dating from around 1776. It was originally built as a coach house for Robert Adam's Home House, which is now the Courtauld Institute at No. 20 Portman Square. The building is constructed of stock brick and features a slate roof. The street front was rebuilt in the early 20th century, while the garden front, which faces the rear of Home House, retains a more polite appearance.
The building is two storeys high and three bays wide, with the central bay slightly advanced. It has a central doorway and recessed sash windows that are set under flat gauged arches, all contained within a triple blind arcade composition. The arches rise from linked stone imposts, and the structure is topped with a stone coped parapet that is capped by decorative vases.
