Description
29 Charles Street is a terrace house built around 1710 to 1753. It features painted brick and a slate roof, standing four storeys tall with a basement. The facade is three windows wide, with an off-centre doorway that is flanked by wooden engaged Doric columns. Above the doorway is a broken entablature with an open pediment, a six-panel door, and a semicircular radial glazed fanlight. The revealed sash windows, some of which still have glazing bars, are set under flat gauged arches, with the centre window on the second floor being blind. There is a bracketed cornice above the second floor and a parapet with coping. The property has cast iron area railings topped with flambé torch finials. Inside, the ground floor front room retains full panelling and an enriched cornice, while the second floor rooms have plainer panelling. The cut string staircase features slender turned balusters that sweep to columnar newels, with the bottom flight turned through 90 degrees at the foot, creating a more spacious hall that was formed in the 1920s.
