Description

No 18A is a corner end of terrace house built around 1750 to 1753. It has a stuccoed exterior from the early to mid-19th century and a slate roof. The building is four storeys tall, with a basement and a dormered mansard. It features a two-bay front facing Charles Street and a six-bay return to Chesterfield Hill, which includes a projecting full-height entrance bay and a full-height canted bay on the right side. The ground floor is rusticated, and the doorway has a moulded architrave with a stepped keystone that rises to a cornice supported by consoles, which in turn rise from panelled pilaster strips. The entrance includes a six-panel door and a rectangular fanlight. The revealed sash windows do not have glazing bars, with the first-floor windows featuring entablatures over flat arches and the sills of the second-floor windows supported on consoles. There are plat bands and sill bands on both elevations, along with a crowning cornice and blocking course. A cast iron balcony is present on the first floor facing Charles Street, and there are cast iron area railings. The building is included for its group interest, situated on a corner site.
