Description

Number 17 Charles Street is a terrace house built around 1753. It is constructed of brown brick and has a slate roof. The building has five storeys and a basement, with an attic storey added in the early 19th century. The façade features three windows and a stone architrave doorway on the left, which has a cornice supported by consoles and a glazed canopy from around 1900 on wrought iron supports. The windows are revealed sash types without glazing bars, set under gauged flat arches. There is a main bracketed cornice above the second floor, and plat bands at the first and fourth floors, topped with a parapet that has coping. The first floor also features an early 19th-century cast iron balcony and cast-iron railings.

Inside, although there have been alterations, the building retains a stone staircase with square section outward curving wrought iron balusters and a ramped rail, along with a panelled dado that is top lit. The front rooms on the ground and first floors have mid to late 18th-century plasterwork ceilings; the ceiling on the first floor is in a rococo style, while the ground floor ceiling reflects a more neoclassical taste.
