Description

Crewe House is a detached town mansion built in 1730 by Edward Shepherd, with significant alterations made in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The building is stuccoed and features a slate roof, set back from the road in a garden. It has three storeys and a main block with seven windows, where the central three bays are slightly advanced and topped with a pediment. There are also three window bowed wings at each end of the front. The central entrance porch projects and has an entablature, flanked by two semi-circular arched windows, with similarly arched windows on the rest of the ground floor. The upper floors feature flat arched windows, all of which are revealed glazing bar sashes. Above the ground floor, the central three bays have an attached portico supported by four Ionic columns that hold up the pediment. The building includes a plat band, moulded cornice, and blocking course.

The interior has been significantly altered in the early 19th century, showcasing restrained neo-classical and Grecian details, and further changes in the early 20th century introduced fine neo-Adam Georgian decoration. However, it retains some plasterwork ceilings that may be original to Shepherd, along with Rococo work and a stone staircase with wrought iron balusters. This mansion is a rare example of a detached house set in its own grounds.
