Description

The building at 21 and 22 Elgin Mews North is a pair of houses dating from approximately 1864, with significant restoration and possible reconstruction behind the street facade around 1980. Constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, the building features red brick dressings and freestone detailing. It is two storeys high and presents a monumental composition of three bays, with a central carriage arch. The architectural style is Italian Gothic. Red brick pilasters flank the building, featuring a Lombard frieze to their capitals and supporting a freestone cornice. The round carriage arch has cogged moulding and a pointed head, incorporating a red brick keystone and hood-mould. To either side of the arch, a group of three round-arched sash windows are arranged within a round-arched arcade, featuring pointed heads with red brick banding and keystones, supported on freestone colonettes with a spiral lower half and foliate capitals. A freestone string course runs above. The building is topped with a parapet featuring pilasters continuing in red brick. Entrance doors are located to the rear. Round-arched sash windows are present on the return wall, detailed similarly to the front facade.
