Description

Maida Vale Underground Station is an underground railway station built between 1914 and 1915, likely designed by Stanley Heaps, following the style established by his predecessor Leslie W. Green. The station features red glazed faience and is a single storey structure with three main bays facing Elgin Avenue and two additional bays on the right-hand return. Each bay has a segmental arched three-part window that is both mullioned and transomed. The bays are separated by pilaster strips that have inset semi-circular pediments at the level of the arches. The windows have lattice glazing, and there is a modillion cornice beneath the words "Maida Vale Underground Station," with an enlarged "U" and "D" flanking distinctive banding. The original tilework includes the words "Entrance" and "Exit."

Inside, the station is particularly complete and attractive. Stairs with iron balustrading lead down through a double-height entrance hall, which features tiled pilasters and surrounds. The modillion cornice band includes two mosaic roundels displaying the UndergrounD sign, a reminder of the original solid red roundel that was once common throughout the system but is now rare. The lower part of the hall is fully tiled in cream and green, with pedimented ticket desks and areas of chequer tiling in the inner hall. This chequer tiling continues as poster surrounds in the upper escalator hall. Below this, escalators lead down to a tiled lower escalator hall that features a clock and hanging illuminated signs directing passengers to the platforms on either side. The ends of the tunnels are fully tiled, with tiled pilasters and poster signs in between. The south tunnel entrances have voussoir surrounds. Maida Vale is a late and particularly complete example of a station designed in the Leslie Green style for the Underground Electric Railways Company of London.
