Description
1 and 2 Elgin Mews North, including 170 Randolph Avenue, are a pair of houses built around 1864, which have undergone significant restoration around 1980 and may have been reconstructed behind their street facade. They are constructed from yellow brick in Flemish bond, featuring red brick dressings and freestone detailing. Each house is two storeys high and presents a monumental composition of three bays with a central carriage arch in the Italian Gothic style. The flanking red brick pilasters have Lombard friezes for capitals that support a freestone cornice. The round carriage arch has cogged moulding and a pointed head, with red brick detailing, a keystone, and a hood-mould. On either side, there is a triple group of round-arched sashes set in a round-arched arcade with pointed heads, red brick banding, and keystones supported on freestone colonettes that have spiral lower halves and foliate capitals. Above, there are red brick sunk panels. The parapet features pilasters continuing in red brick, and the entrances are located at the rear. The return wall has round-arched sashes with similar detailing to the front.
