Description
The war memorial at the Church of St Mark is a First World War memorial erected around 1920. It is made of carved sandstone and is located in the churchyard, immediately south-west of the church tower. The memorial features a crucifix set on a cornice and the capital of a Tuscan column, standing approximately 4 meters high. Flanking the crucifix are statues of St Mary and St John. At the center of the cross, there is a carved scroll with the letters: IN/ RI; Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, which translates to Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. The column is supported by a square plinth that is 0.7 meters high and a two-tiered square base that is 1 meter high. Surrounding the plinth is an inscription that reads, anti-clockwise from the south-west: TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND/ THE MEMORY OF THE MEN/ FROM THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918. Below this inscription are the names of 118 individuals who lost their lives. On the top tier of the base, there is an additional inscription: THE LORD SHALL GIVE HIS PEOPLE/ THE BLESSING OF PEACE.
