Description
The Church of St Mark is a Decorated Gothic style church built between 1846 and 1847, designed by Thomas Cundy Senior. The tower and spire were completed in 1864 by Thomas Cundy Junior, and the chancel was added between 1877 and 1878 by E.B. Ferrey. The church is constructed of ragstone with ashlar dressings. It features a wide, aisleless five-bay nave, a lower chancel, a three-stage western tower with a recessed breach spire, and a south-west porch. The nave has two-light windows with flowing tracery, along with a parapet and crocketed pinnacles.
Inside, there are galleries to the north, south and west, supported by cast iron columns with traceried beams and fretwork. A five-light east window is present. The chancel is richly decorated with marble cladding and a painted roof. The church contains significant stained glass by Clayton and Bell, Kempe and Towers, among others.
