Description
A detached villa built around 1820 in yellow stock brick, with a shallow hipped slate roof. It is two storeys high with a raised basement. The north-facing entrance front has three bays, with a central flight of steps and railings leading to a Doric porch with fluted columns. The raised ground floor has 6/6-pane sash windows with balconettes featuring strigillation and gauged arches. The first floor has similar 8/8-pane sash windows. The west side has projecting chimney breasts and windows to the raised ground and first floors, with decorative ironwork. Pairs of chimneystacks are on either side. The rear elevation features a lower central stair window over a projecting raised ground floor bay, and windows retaining decorative ironwork. The interior, which has not been inspected, is reported to contain numerous original features including plasterwork, joinery, marble fireplaces, an open string staircase with stick balusters, and a mahogany handrail. This villa is one of the earlier examples in St John's Wood, likely dating from the 1820s and shown on Crutchley's 1829 map of London. It is a handsome Neoclassical villa that has remained largely unaltered. From 1879 to 1888, it was the home of Edward John Gregory RA (1850-1909), a painter and sometime president of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.
