Description
Nos. 41 and 43 Wellington Street are market shops and offices built around 1871-72 as part of the Bedford Estate redevelopment. The buildings are designed in an early Georgian style, constructed from red brick with painted stone or stucco dressings, and topped with a slate roof. They rise four storeys and are three windows wide.
On the ground floor, there is an office door to the right and a shop door to the left, which flank a barred display window with a panelled stall riser. This is framed by Doric pilasters that support an entablature-fascia. The upper floors feature recessed sash windows set within architraves. The first-floor windows have full entablatures, while the second and third-floor windows are segmental headed with stepped keystones. A scrolled panel connects the first and second-floor windows. The main cornice is located above the second floor, topped by a crowning cornice.
