Description

This building, known as Charles H Fox Limited and Robert White and Sons, along with Harper and Row Limited, is a Grade II listed corner block of offices constructed around 1857 by G. F. Fry for the Strand District Board of Works. It features a stucco exterior and a slate roof, designed in the Italianate style. The building stands three storeys tall with cellars and is four windows wide, including a single window bowed corner and a two-window return to Burleigh Street.

The ground floor is rusticated, with a corner entrance at No. 28 that is approached by a flight of steps. This entrance consists of an archivolt arched doorway flanked by engaged columns, supporting an entablature with an enriched panel that displays the title of the Strand Board. To the left, the entrance to No. 26 features another archivolt arched doorway with a console bracketed pediment and a key mask. The ground floor windows have been altered and feature mask keystones.

The first floor has triplicate windows with cornices, while the second floor showcases semicircular arched windows adorned with fruit-enriched pendants on consoles that support pediments above, along with enriched aprons. The south bay of the Burleigh Street return includes Venetian-type windows. Both floors are articulated by pilaster orders, with Ionic columns above Doric ones, and the building is crowned with an entablature and blocking course. It occupies a prominent corner site.
