Description

This is a corner building comprising shops and chambers, likely dating from around 1855 to 1860, designed by Charles Gray. It is constructed with patent cement render and has a slate roof. The design incorporates a curved corner and features richly detailed Italianate elements. The building is four storeys high and has nine windows across its facade, with shallow divisions of three and two windows, flanking a four-window corner. The ground floor has architraved doors and windows, with one opening and shop front to each unit, and particularly to number 20 of Tavistock Street. Broad pilaster piers with ornate floral capitals support an entablature and bracketed cornice. The first and second floors have sash windows framed by pilaster strips with consoles to the cornices, set within panels defined by channelled pilaster strips. A bracketed cornice incorporates a frieze with polychrome tile metopes above the second floor. The attic storey has sash windows within eared architraves, separated by squat, coupled pilasters which support large, dentil-enriched consoles to a projecting cornice. The building is finished with a pierced-work parapet with capped dies.
