Description

The lamp post outside 24 Russell Street is a gas street light dating from 1910, made by William Sugg and Company Limited. It features a replacement Upright Rochester-type lantern installed by Sugg Lighting Limited in the later 20th century.

The lamp post is made of cast iron and has a glazed lantern constructed from iron, spun copper, and enamelled steel. It consists of a tapering, fluted 'Eddystone' column topped with the late-20th century lantern.

On the upper part of the base of the column, one side displays the wording and crest of Westminster City Council, while the other side features the royal cypher G V R along with the date 1910. The lower ring of the column is embossed with the manufacturer's name, SUGG.

The replacement lantern includes a circular drum and rain-shield above an inverted, six-mantle burner enclosed in teardrop-shaped glass with a drainage hole at the base. This assembly is held in place by an iron cradle with two curved stabilising uprights extending from the clock box.
