Description
The lamp post outside 4-6 Russell Street is a gas street light dating from 1910, featuring an Upright Rochester lantern made by William Sugg and Company Limited, likely around 1930.
The lamp post is made of cast iron and has a glazed lantern constructed from iron, spun copper, and enamelled steel. It has a tapering, fluted column, identified as model 1275 in the William Sugg catalogue and known as the 'Eddystone', topped with the Upright Rochester lantern. The base of the column displays the Westminster City Council crest on one side and a registration plaque with the number 7294. The opposite side features the royal cypher G V R and the date 1910.
An additional metal plaque is attached to the fluted part of the column, inscribed with: 'City of Westminster/ Hanging baskets presented by/ IN MEMORY OF ANDREW COSTAIN'. The lantern includes a circular, weatherproof chimney above an inverted, six-mantle burner encased in teardrop-shaped glass with a drainage hole at the base. The main body of the lantern is supported by a pair of upright arms that extend at right angles from the cast iron control clock box, leading to a horizontal enamelled steel reflector that supplies gas to the chimney. These arms feature original decorative ironwork scrolls typical of inter-war Rochester lanterns, although the lower parts of the scrolls are missing.
