Description

Crown Court Church, also known as the Church of Scotland, is a church founded in 1718 and rebuilt in 1909 by Eustace Balfour of Balfour and Turner. It is constructed of red brick with Portland stone dressings and features a slate roof. The design is a restrained yet distinctive Free Style, typical of Balfour's work. The church has three storeys and a recessed slated attic, measuring four bays wide. The outer bays serve as doorways and are designed to resemble towers, with the left bay topped by an open, pedimented pavilion and the right bay featuring battlements. The windows are mullioned and transomed, with iron grilles on the ground floor. The top storey is pilastered, with a bracketed cornice and balustrade. Inside, the church has a galleried layout, showcasing an early use of steel framing encased in wood, and benefits from clerestory lighting.
