Description

This is a cast-iron lamp standard located outside the Prince Alfred public house at the junction of Castellain Road and Formosa Street, dating from around 1898. The lamp features a tapered, fluted shaft with decorative bands and crest emblems on the plinth, which include a lion holding a staff. Originally, there were four crests, but one has been lost. The north-facing arm of the cross bar at the collar is missing, while the central floral motif and the elaborate bracket on the other arm are still intact. Above the capital, there is a replacement glazed ‘Nico’ lantern with a finial, which was installed in 1988.
