Description

TQ 2980 NW CITY OF WESTMINSTER OLD BOND STREET Wl 70/67 (east side) 16-1-81 No 24 (including Nos 2 and 4 Burlington Gardens) - II Grand commercial premises on corner site. 1926 by Vincent Harris. Portland stone with gable end leaded roof. Unabashed Gothic Revival with Arts and Crafts detailing. 5 storeys and attic in steeply pitched roof, surmounted on ridge by delicately leaded fleche. 7 windows to Burlington Gardens and 3 to gable end on Old Bond Street. Ground floor has arcaded openings, clean cut but for moulding to arch. To Old Bond Street the windows of upper floors are deeply set , the central ones contained in moulded framework of 3 storey arch rising into the gable. To Burlington Gardens the 2nd and 6th bays have 3 storeyed oriels linked across 2nd floor by pierced Gothic stone balcony; all upper floor windows 4 and 3 light sharply profiled mullioned iron casements with leaded lights. Carved and polychromed stonework and heraldic devices to oriels and to frieze below parapet with weathered coping. Ornate Arts and Crafts ironwork to rainwater goods. The fleche has a carillon of bells. Very prominent corner site.
