Description
The Horse and Rider sculpture, created in 1975 by Dame Elisabeth Frink, is a Grade II listed bronze sculpture commissioned by Trafalgar House. It stands approximately 244 centimeters high on a rough bronze base, which is signed ‘Frink, 1975’ in the top-left corner. This base is set atop a granite plinth that features the inscription "HORSE AND RIDER BY ELISABETH FRINK" on its south face.
The sculpture depicts a horse and rider, both of which are roughly finished and face southwest. The horse is depicted in a walking pose, characterized by a lightly-stylized mane, a shortened tail, and an expressionless gaze, without any saddlery. The rider, a man, is unclothed and barefoot, sitting slightly askew on the horse. His left shoulder is pushed back, allowing his arm to drop with his hand resting casually against the horse’s left flank. His right arm is bent at the elbow, with his hand placed on the horse’s mane. The muscles of both the horse and rider are lightly but clearly defined.
