Description
Nos 23 and 23A on Old Bond Street is a house that has been converted into shops and offices. It dates from the early 18th century and was refronted around 1840. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brick and features a slate mansard roof that has been rebuilt at the rear, along with a brick end stack. It has a double-depth plan, stands four storeys tall, and has a three-window range.
The left side has a 20th-century shop front next to a stone Edwardian doorcase, which is adorned with Tuscan half columns supporting a plain entablature and an egg and dart cornice. The first floor has French windows, while the second floor features plate glass sash windows, and the third floor has 20th-century windows. These are all set within mid-19th century stucco architraves, which include bracketed cornices and a central pediment on the first floor, as well as cornices and bracketed cills on the second floor. There are late 19th-century balcony railings and a moulded stucco cornice.
Inside, there is an early 18th-century open-well staircase leading from the first floor, which has square newels, a moulded handrail, and elaborately turned balusters set on an open string. The rear room on the ground floor features early 18th-century enriched plaster cornices on the ceiling. The stair hall has early 18th-century moulded skirting and late 19th-century bolection-moulded panels on the lower stage. The second-floor room on the right includes an enriched plaster cornice, a panelled dado, panelled doors set in moulded architraves, and an 18th-century fireplace.
