Description
The Royal Arcade, dating from around 1890, is an arcade of shops that runs through to Albemarle Street. It features a stucco elevation and a glazed roof over the arcade. The building is two storeys high and has a three-bay front adorned with ornate eclectic classical details. A large archway with a heavy console keystone frames the entrance to the arcade and the flanking pair of shops, which have windows that bow into the arcade.
On the first floor, there is a central archivolt arched window with a cast iron balcony, and recumbent female figures are depicted in relief panels above the shop fronts. The parapet is detailed with dies, and the centerpiece of the arcade rises with caryatids supporting a shaped gable. The elevation facing Albemarle Street is nearly identical to that of the arcade. Inside, the arcade features a two-storey composition on each side, with curved bay shop windows and doorways divided by engaged Ionic columns. The first-floor windows have segmental arches, and richly decorated stucco arches cross the arcade at each bay to support the glazed roof.
