Description

TQ 2980 NW CITY OF WESTMINSTER OLD BOND STREET Wl 70/70 (west side) No 31 - II Commercial premises. 1898-1900 by Beresford Pite with sculpture by Farmer and Brindley from models by Chavalliaud. Stucco faced, slate roof. Free classicism with Pite's individual use of sculpture. 4 storeys. One wide bay. Ground floor has mid C20 shop window and door in original architrave frame. Tripartite windows centred to upper floor with idiosyncratic capitals to dividing piers on 1st floor and to columns on 2nd floor; the 3rd floor window is segmental arched and rises into the crowning open segmental pedi- ment crowning the front. The latter is effectively carried on quoin pilasters at the foot of which, flanking the shaped apron of the 1st floor sill, are crouching Michelangel-esque female figures whilst between 1st and 2nd floors, flanking former name panel, and recessed in the quoin pilasters, are shallow relief panels of female draped figures, rather a la Jean Goujon. In front of the 3rd floor window an iron trelliswork railing with ornately finialed flanking standards.
